Bristol City’s hopes of qualifying for the Championship play-off have faded after they were defeated by Sheffield Wednesday. Sheffield scored two goals against Bristol’s only goal to claim a deserved victory.
The match was played at Ashton Gate thus giving Bristol the home advantage. However, the hosts were unable to keep the visitors in check after conceding one goal in the thirteenth minute. The goal was scored by Connor Wickham through a header.
The Owls maintained the lead until the end of the first half. The visitors also created multiple goal-scoring chances but the shots were blocked by the goalkeeper.
The Owls doubled their lead in the 59-th minute, complicating the winning matrix for the hosts. Massimo Luongo’s close-range shot saw the back of the net, bringing the score to 0-2.
However, the hosts reduced the score deficit in the 68-th minute after Nahki Wells’header saw the back of the net. However, they were unable to get an equalizer despite having many shots on goal in the second half.
Bristol City has now lost all the two games played since the resumption of the season on June 20. They are currently at position 12 in the Championship league table. They require 5 points to get to the top six.
The loss points to a mid-table finish as the likely outcome for Bristol City. Therefore, the team will most likely not qualify for the Championship play-off. This spells doom for the team despite being one of the strongest teams in the league.
Although Sheffield Wednesday won the match, it is currently at position 13 meaning that it will still not make it to top six by the end of the season. Therefore, the two teams’ hopes of qualifying for Championship play-offs have faded.
